The NOPE. Book Tag
This tag was created by Farah @ A BookTube Book on YouTube. Honestly, this is possibly my favorite tag because I love the snark factor.
Quick disclaimer, because some people just don’t understand that people are entitled to their own damn opinions. Some of these books, I love and some I despise. That is my own personal opinion. You can totally disagree and love a book that I hate, and just because I don’t like it, that doesn’t mean that hatred reflects on its fan or it’s author.
1. NOPE. Ending:
A book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy.
That ending from The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak. I will not accept this ending. Everything is fine, nothing happened. Ella and Aziz happy. Now, I love this book but that ending was entirely uncalled for. I get that Elif doesn’t believe in happy endings, but did you really have to go that far. If I wanted to read TFIOS I would read TFIOS.
2. NOPE. Protagonist:
A main character you dislike and drives you crazy.
Jonathan Harker from Dracula by Bram Stoker. I simply cannot with this dude. I love this book, but I cannot stand Jonathan Harker and his stupidity. NOPE.
3. NOPE. Series:
A series that turned out to be one huge pile of NOPE. after you’ve invested all of that time and energy on it, or a series you gave up on because it wasn’t worth it anymore.
The Throne of Glass Series and or The A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas.
4. NOPE. Popular pairing:
A “ship” you don’t support.
Enzo and Adelina from The Young Elites Trilogy by Marie Lu. Now, I like Adelina a lot and I don’t hate Enzo (though he’s very low on my list of favorite characters for this series and I way prefer Sergio ) I really don’t like Enzo and Adelina as an item. I was not a happy camper when they first kissed, I almost threw the book across the room though I couldn’t because I was in the car.
5. NOPE. Plot twist:
A plot twist you didn’t see coming or didn’t like.
Silent House by Orhan Pamuk. I knew someone was gonna die. But I never thought it would be who it was. I was 100% okay with who I thought might die because it would have been his own damn fault.
6. NOPE. Protagonist action/decision:
A character decision that made you shake your head NOPE.
Gia from Mafia Girl by Deborah Blumenthal. You DO NOT JUST STALK A COP.
7. NOPE. Genre:
A genre you will never read.
I read pretty much every genre on this earth, but I’m gonna stay clear away from Christian Fiction. I’m agnostic and I respect Christianity, but I’d much prefer to read about diverse books with hints of religion, and then I prefer to read about Islam.
8. NOPE. Book format:
Book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition
Mass Market Paperbacks. Just NOPE.
9. NOPE. Trope:
A trope that makes you go NOPE.
Toxic relationships that are made falsely “cute” and never admit there problematic or change. And I end up shipping it, even though it’s so damn wrong and I feel guilty. *cough* Murad & Farya *cough*
10. NOPE. Recommendation:
A book recommendation that is constantly hyped and pushed at you that you simply refuse to read.
This Savage Song by Victoria (or V.E) Schwab. Honestly, I want to get on the VE Fan train, but most of her books are very hyped and not exactly my cup of tea. I’m not saying that I’ll never read V.E Schwab but probably not anytime soon. Her 2018 or 2019 release does sound up my alley though.
11. NOPE. Cliche/pet peeve:
A cliche or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.
I’m going to get specific. When people write books about the Ottoman Empire, but they spell historic figures names weirdly, have incorrect information, or just make my historical babies into terrible people (mostly rapists who have no souls.)
12. NOPE. Love interest:
The love interest that’s not worthy of being one. A character you don’t think should have been a viable love interest.
I know this is a book tag, but Mehmed and Meleksima. NO, that should not have even been a concept. Now I get that TIMS is all about the drama, but of all the people Mehmed could have fallen in love with it had to be Meleksima. I ship Meleksima and Osman so hard, it hurts so the fact that Mehmed and Meleksima is suggested is a personal insult. As for a book person, I’ll go with Marek from Uprooted by Naomi Novik, I actually don’t remember if he was even a love interest option, but I can’t think right now and I need someone book related. I hate Marek, and he should not have even been a character.
This answer is a hot mess, partially because it’s so damn hot and humid right now even though it’s like 12 am.
13. NOPE. Book:
A book that shouldn’t have existed that made you say NOPE.
The Prodigal Son by Kimberla Roby. Sorry. Nope. I read about 25 pages and it was just that bad. The main characters were so stupid, and I have a rant coming. Also, for the record about 3/4 of Moby Dick shouldn’t be a book either.
14. NOPE. Villain:
A scary villain/antagonist you would hate to cross and would make you run in the opposite direction.
Delores Umbridge from Harry Potter. Literally, the worst fictional person ever to grace a page. She is the worst. I would not like to meet her. I’d probably kill myself if I did. But she can totally just go die.
15. NOPE. Death:
A character death that still haunts you.
Queequeg. I will never be over that or will I ever forgive Herman Melville. I am so bitter, my one consolation is that Captain Ahab also dies.
16. NOPE. Author:
An author you had a bad experience reading for and have decided to quit.
Sarah J. Maas. Yeah, I’m gonna read ACOWAR and then I’m done with SJM. Thank you for Throne of Glass, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Crown of Midnight, other than that all her other books I really didn’t like for various reasons. If you wanna know why, please check out my ACOMAF rant.

Ugh, Victoria Schwab is SO overrated. She has good ideas, but she can’t keep up the pace during books. I’ve enjoyed the beginnings of the series I’ve started by her but by the end of the first book they always burn out. Her books are a huge disappointment. I gave up on her.

I’ve never actually tried her, but there are so many other books I’d prefer to read – and I must prioratize otherwise my tbr is gonna get way out of hand (not that it was ever in hand)

and SAME. I’ve not yet hopped aboard the Victoria Schwab hype train yet, but maybe some day… I still haven’t read any of her books, oops. Though I do constantly hear great things about them!!
